The Importance of Keeping a Food Journal

March 28, 2017 By Valeo Physical Therapy

When you start on a weight loss journey keeping a food journal can help tremendously with keeping yourself on track, monitoring what you eat, and making adjustments as needed. Let’s take a look at some of the other benefits of keeping a food journal.

Often, we think about counting calories but what a food journal can do is help you realize where the calories are actually coming from. It becomes easier to exam the breakdown of protein, carbohydrates, and fat which are 3 nutrients that provide energy to your body. According to Marc Perry, Founder and CEO of BUILTLEAN, “learning more about the calorie breakdowns in the foods I ate and each day as a whole was probably the second most helpful part that I found to keeping a food journal”.

Secondly, a food journal can help with portion control. By learning more about calories, you also learn more about portion control and the types of foods you can eat in larger portions like lean meats, vegetables, and certain fruits, and the types of food you want to eat sparingly. Overall, you become far more cognizant of portion control(BUILTLEAN).

In reality, we live such busy lives and we tend to eat more than we think we do. We often fail to take into consideration the portion size of food, the snacking, and calories from drinks. A food journal helps keep record of these items to give you and your nutritionist a better idea of what is happening during the day.

Are you eating because you are stressed? Sad? Bored? Are you snacking the entire time you watch TV? A food journal can bring to light these types of behaviors and you can pinpoint exactly what triggers you to eat when you shouldn’t.

In a recent study conducted by the Cleveland Clinic, following 1,800 men and women over a six-month period showed that those who kept a food dairy lost 50 percent more weight than those who did not.
